Like most people, I am very "visual" and years ago when I began my search for the perfect tribal tattoo, I was drawn to the top tribal tattoo gallery on the internet. This gave me the background, meanings and some illustrations of Tribal Tats and made my decision so much easier. This is what I found:

Tribal Tattoos have a very rich history extending back to the era of tribal warriors. This is a very ancient art form, filled with deep spiritual meaning. Tribal tattoos were used as protection for warriors in order to give them courage and strength and to keep them safe in times of war or when they were out hunting. It was believed that a tattoo could give them power. Tattoos were also used to denote accomplishments, social status, lineage, ancestors and to honor their gods.

It was also considered a form of blessing for a tribesman or woman wearing the tattoo. The meanings behind the tattoos vary from tribe to tribe and from one part of the world to the next, with location and type of tattoo carrying great significance.

A boom in modern tribal tattoos started in 1982 when "Tattoo Time" magazine was released by Don Ed Hardy and Leo Zulueta. The first issue featured native tattoos from Samoa and Borneo and was titled "New Tribalism".
Zulueta's reinterpretations of traditional Borenon designs caught on like wildfire in the punk music scene of the early 1980s, and quickly spread across the tattoo world. Though the art forms have been mostly preserved, the history and meaning behind many of these symbols has been lost to the modern Western culture that now sports them.

Negative tattoo associations, such as those that are gang related or used to mark criminals, have been lessened a bit by the beautiful and unique style of tribal tattoos. It only took a year and a half for the tribal designs to become incredibly popular and today it is still one of the most popular tattoo choices.

Tribal Tattoos:

* Instantly Recognizable

* Eye Catching and Unique

* Dramatic Use of Aggressive Dark Lines in Jagged Symmetrical Shapes

* Most Often Done in Simple Black and Skin Tones, but can be infused with color to brighten overall look

* Tribal Tats are Concerned with the "Feel", rather than the Specific Look
